Education of Girls with Visual Impairment
This film opens with insights from Ravindra Prasad Singh, who reflects on the strengths and challenges of inclusive education in India.
At Antar Jyoti Balika Vidyalaya, a residential school in Bihar, we meet Pragati Raj, a blind student who shares her experiences and the difference this school has made in her life. As the film unfolds, Renu Kumari, the school’s warden, speaks about the school’s commitment to empowering students with disabilities through quality education, community, and support. This is a story of growth, opportunity, and the everyday impact of inclusive education, where students are given the tools to thrive and build brighter futures.
Every task we undertake, comes with its strengths and weaknesses.
Sometimes it succeeds, and other times it falls short.
In my view, this also holds true for inclusive education.
It is good that students who are blind or have disabilities will study alongside non-disabled peers from the start, fostering interaction between them.
Efforts are underway to educate students with and without disabilities together, aiming to create harmony between them—there is no doubt about this.
However, in my view, there are also many challenges involved in achieving this.
For instance, one of the biggest challenge is that in schools where these students are enrolled, teachers may lack the capability and skills to effectively teach students with disabilities or visual impairments.
Teachers have been appointed in each block, and efforts are being made to place them in schools where teachers are trained in special education and capable of teaching Braille and other essential skills to the children.
While this initiative may lead to success in the future, it has not yet produced significant results.
Currently, the teachers assigned to this role are primarily focused on finding students with disabilities, particularly those with visual impairments, and referring them to special schools.
Secondly, there is difficulty in promoting and developing sports as many schools do not even have playgrounds.
Furthermore, in schools with playgrounds, teachers often lack knowledge about the types of games that can be adapted for students with visual impairments.
This will lead to limited development of play skills and sports opportunities for students with visual impairments.

Son, listen…
Where is the audience?
So then tell the audience…We are the audience…bend down and say.
It hurts…pretend to be older, say it with more feeling…come on, do it.

I am Pragati Raj, I am a student of class 6, studying at Antar Jyoti Balika Vidyalaya.
I have been studying here since 2019, and I enjoy studying here very much.
This is a residential school and here, subjects like Hindi, English, GK, Maths, Music, Science and other interesting subjects are taught here.
Before 2019, I used to study at a sighted School.
Actually, I was blind back then too, but I didn’t know about this school until I discovered it through Google, which mentioned it as a good school in Bihar.
So, I came to study here in 2019.
I used to face some difficulties at my old school, for example, they used to have painting activities for everyone, but I wasn’t asked to participate in anything and I used to feel bad about that.

Antarjyoti Balika Vidyalaya is a school with 110 girls studying here and classes from 1st to 10th grade.
The students also live in a hostel here, which has many students.
After graduating from here, students move on to various places, with many pursuing education in reputable colleges and others already working in their chosen fields.
100 to 150 of the students are currently doing a job.
The hostel provides all necessary facilities to the children free of cost, as they come from humble backgrounds.
All the children are capable and perform well in their exams.
I came here in 2010, and it’s been 14 years.
Over these 14 years, I have seen many children in good posts.
