I am 37 years old and I suffer from Thalassemia major
I was born as a healthy child, but within a few months I used to fall sick very often
I had become very pale, I would not eat
I was almost on the verge of dying
And my parents would go to one doctor, to another, to another and then they saw lot of doctors and no one was able to figure out what the issue is
Because, back then very few people knew about Thalassemia
So my body doesn't generate blood on its own
I have to depend on someone else's blood to live
For example, if I don't go for my blood transfusion every 15 days, probably in, you know, in few weeks, I'll stop moving around
I will not be able to get up, brush my teeth, go to the washroom, nothing
And probably in few months I'll die
So, I have to go for my blood transfusion every month
Not every month, actually every 15 days, okay
And then, so transfusion is just one part of it, wherein they just, you know, give me someone else's blood
and then I'm fine for next 15 days, okay
But when you go for blood transfusion, there are various side effects
And people think that blood transfusion itself is a very painful process
But believe me, the side effects are even more painful
When you get blood transfusion, there is iron deposition in your body
So usually for a normal human being, the doctor will give you an iron supplement
But that iron supplement is poison for me, because my body has lot of iron because of blood transfusion
So every night I have to take an injection before sleeping
And that's not an injection where you push and it's done
So there is a machine that slowly pushes the injection
So let's say if I take injection at night at 10:00, it gets done morning at ten or eleven
So basically I sleep with the injection on
India is considered as a Thalassemia capital
There are more than 4 million Thalassemia carriers
So I request people to please get screened for Thalassemia, so that we don't have more births that's related to Thalassemia
And to the rest of my friends, I would request everyone to please donate blood
It's very important
Our lives are dependent on someone donating the blood, then we get the transfusion
And, on the contrary to the rumour that is, that blood donation is not safe
It's 100% safe
